Awards & Honors

The following list shows the prerequisites for Awards and Honors in the Senior High.

 

Honor Cord

To qualify to wear an Honor Cord at Graduation, a student must earn a cumulative 92.00% average, beginning with 9th grade and continuing through the third marking period of the 12th-grade year.

 

Honor Roll

All graded subjects count toward Honor Roll.  An un-weighted averaged of 92% must be attained.  No grade of less than 84% in any subject may be earned.

 

Scholar of Distinction

To qualify as a Scholar of Distinction, a student must earn a cumulative 97% average, beginning with 9th grade and continuing through the third marking period of the 12th-grade year, or be one of the 10 highest ranked students in the senior class.

 

Senior High Academic Achievement Award/Banquet

To qualify for receiving the H-10, H-11, H-12 pin a student must earn at least a 92.00% cumulative average during the first three nine-week marking periods of all courses and have no failing grades during the first three marking periods or no grade(s) below 84.

 

National Honor Society Membership

Senior High

Any student having any discipline issues, including, but not limited to any major suspension for offenses of Drugs or Alcohol, Possession of Weapons, Fighting, or Threats may not be eligible to be included to be inducted into the National Honor Society.

 

The criteria for induction into the National Honor Society follows.  Failure to meet any of these requirements will disqualify the candidates from membership in the National Honor Society.

 

Academics:

Potential members are identified as those junior or senior class students who have attended the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School the previous seven (7) marking periods, maintained a grade average of at least 94%, and no failing grade during those previous seven (7) marking periods and completed a minimum of three (3) college-bound level courses.

 

The candidate must demonstrate involvement in service activities by participating in one of the following:

  1. Active membership in two service clubs
  2. Active membership in one service club and one sport
  3. Participation in one service club and in a school or community service project
  4. Participation in an ongoing community service project
     

Leadership and Character:

The candidate will be rated by his/her main subject teachers using a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest on the following characteristics:  cooperation, industry, reliability, leadership, and initiative.  Any candidate receiving two or more 2's in any of the categories will not be eligible for induction.  Failure to complete the NHS application by the given deadline will make a candidate ineligible. 

 

Specific criteria defining Leadership & Character:

Leadership:

  • resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions
  • demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
  • exercises influences on peers in upholding school ideals
  • contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school
  • is able to delegate responsibilities
  • exemplified positive attitudes
  • inspires positive behavior in others
  • demonstrates academic initiative
  • successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; demonstrates reliability and dependability without prodding
  • is a forerunner in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities
  • is thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted

 

Character:

  • takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
  • consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)
  • upholds principles of morality and ethics
  • cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, offices, halls, etc.
  • demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability
  • shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others
  • observes instructions and rules, punctuality, and faithfulness both inside and outside the classroom
  • has powers of concentration and sustained attention shown by perseverance and application to studies
  • manifest truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit from the mistakes of others
  • actively helps rid the school of bad influences or environment
